Watch — More than just a shed

The Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is the national service provider supporting more than 1,200 Men’s, Women’s and Community Sheds and is recognised as one of Australia’s largest male-based community development organisations.

AMSA was established in 2007 by a collection of Australian independent community-based Men’s Sheds to represent, support and promote the Men’s Shed movement. It was founded on the principle of sharing information between sheds and those communities wishing to establish and operate a Men’s Shed. It acts as a central hub for information exchange.

Positive impacts

Camaraderie

"I've found a great group of mates"

Mateship is an important pillar of every Men’s Shed – first and foremost the shed is a place for men to knock about with a group of like-minded mates.

Community

“I give back to the community”

Men’s Sheds are vital community investments delivering programmes and activities that foster community spirit and contribute to building a more inclusive Australia.

Health & Wellbeing

“My health and wellbeing is better because I'm a Shedder”

Many shedders experience improved mental health outcomes. Men (and women) involved at their local Shed report increased self-esteem through participation and learning new skills; de-stigmatisation of experiencing mental health and de-stigmatisation of prevalent social issues related to mental health.

Join the conversation, Shed community

Many men, especially after retirement, find themselves alone, often living in isolation and needing to connect with their community and find new purpose but aren’t sure how. Others just want to learn a new skill or revisit old ones. AMSA have created a number of channels to help continue the discussion outside of the shed. Jump in and join the conversation today.

Shedder in the Spotlight

From the farm to the Shed

If you ever go to Beechworth in North-East Victoria, I would suggest you go around Autumn. Beechworth is famous for its growth during the 1850’s gold rush days… but the only real gold you’ll find there now is in the blanket of Autumn leaves mixed with the rich reds and vibrant oranges from the Elms and Oaks that line the streets (and, of course, in the people).

Like most Australian towns these days, Beechworth is home to a Men’s Shed.  A good one, dare I say, a great one! Nestled discreetly behind the Beechwood Health Service facility, the shed is not only neat, tidy and well set up to keep the riff raff off the street, it’s a cosy respite for many of the members, including long time member Cliff “Cliffy” Cousins.
